Go to work on an egg and no win no fee solicitors

Have you ever read a web-posted article on a slightly contentious issue, like, let's say, for instance no win no fee solicitors and personal injury claims. Please take heed, though I am sure you are aware, the furore of readers comments that will follow is worth the two hours of your life that it will take to read them, if only to discover that people are passionate, outspoken, argumentative, rude, supercilious and some of them can't spel or typi either.

An article written about last year's ban on a re-run of the ad campaign, "Go to work on an egg" is one such case-in-point. The broadsheet article proclaimed, amongst other things, that the campaign had been banned' because the nanny state' government had decided people might actually try to get to work ON AN EGG!

Yes, the article was tongue in cheek; yes, it was meant humorously and yes, it was fairly outrageous. But when the writer started hypothesising a regime where businesses, for example the railways, should be given an acceptable level of injuries and fatalities', his brand of humour became a little wide of the mark. He suggested that schools and sports clubs should be given an idea about how many fatalities on adventure trips they could incur before they would fall foul of any acceptable level' rulings.

And naturally, the gentleman author made a plea for a universal cull of no win no fee solicitors. One should not have expected less.

But the parents of the child who dies on a school trip, the father left unable to support his children after a work related accident, the children left parentless due to a holiday accident; would these people wish to live under the journalist's non-nanny state' style of governing, where employers would be required to show only a modicum of accountability?

The writer, and many people commenting, appear to have missed the point that "no win no fee" litigation allows justice for all in the face of avoidable negligence.

A financial compensation award can only go so far in rebuilding the lives of someone who has suffered, but more often than not the litigation provides closure and the acceptance of responsibility after a circumstance that should never have happened.
