After taking the drug, the previously fit and healthy former college lecturer, became dangerously ill and was later diagnosed with an incurable intestinal disease.
In December 2008, the judge hearing the case ruled against the US drug company saying, "I am satisfied that, on the balance of probability, [the medication] ingested during the drug trial was a significant cause of [the plaintiff's condition]."
He added that if it were later proven the drug had not caused the condition, he would find that it had exacerbated the condition.
The case was settled when the drugs company offered an out-of-court settlement to the Cambridgeshire man.
Legal experts suggested that the outcome may influence up to 450 other UK cases against the pharmaceutical firm.
The pensioner said, "I'm not happy with the sum of money but I'm thrilled at the principle. Now I'm hoping that my victory will enable others to take their case to court."
A Company spokesperson said, "This case is unique and has no significance for any other claim in the UK or elsewhere."
