No no win, no fee compensations for May Day bridge jumpers

An annual celebration that caused injuries to over 40 people in 2005 was outlawed, but when university revellers chose 2009 to re-start the famous May Day bridge jump it was highly likely that if they had been injured they would not have been able to claim no win, no fee compensation.

The May 1st festivities always begin at dawn outside Oxford's Magdalen College where, after bells have rung to alert the crowd, a Latin Mass is sung in hushed reverence amongst university students and Oxford local's who gather annually for the ancient event.

A Cambridgeshire lady in her 70s, who had travelled to Oxford for the 2009 re-enactment, told reporters, "It was great, it was really lovely.

"What I think is most wonderful about it is how the young and old can all be here and there is no sign of disorder, it is very respectful.

"There are lovely young things and lovely old things - it is a very special day."

However, in the 1970's students took to converging on Magdalen Bridge after the Mass and began jumping into the Cherwell River to welcome the start of summer. On several occasions jumpers suffered sprained ankles and broken bones after landing in the shallow waters beneath.

The bridge jumping became so popular that it began to become dangerously out-of-control and after several hospitalisations in 2005 the leaping was banned.

In 2009, 6,000 student revellers converged on the bridge, but more than 30 police officers had been drafted in to control the event.

However, once the main body of the crowd had dispersed and the bridge was reopened to the public, a small number of students climbed over the side of the bridge and plunged into the chilly water.

Thankfully, no-one was hurt in the incident, but it is likely that no-one would have been able to be held accountable for no win no fee compensation if any of the jumpers had suffered personal injury.
