Two recent high profile instances of actors suffering injury while performing have placed the issue of accidents in the theatre firmly in the spotlight. And, although these two cases - with one actor having his throat cut by an unblunted prop knife and the other being shot in the head by a live bullet - were unusually newsworthy, many, less headline-grabbing accidents, occur every year, with no win, no fee theatre accident claims much more common than many would assume.
The Theatre Safety Committee (TSC), a cross-industry organisation that aims to raise awareness of health and safety in the theatrical and broadcasting professions, is mindful of the difficulties currently faced in collating and analysing data relating to accidents in the industry, and as a result has produced a document called the Incident Enquiry Form.
Available from January 2009, the Incident Enquiry Form will allow all working within the industry to submit confidential reports of all incidents, including near-misses, for analysis by the TSC. It is hoped that the confidential nature of the scheme will encourage more people to step forward and contribute positively to health and safety within theatre and broadcasting.
Howard Bird, chairman of the TSC, comments, "The Committee believes confidential reporting of near-misses will help us understand how to avoid the same happening again and perhaps prevent a serious accident. We believe that the industry as a whole will benefit from this analysis. Submission of the form is anonymous so we hope that this will encourage people, who might usually be reticent, to come forward and share their experiences without fear of retribution."
Tellingly, the form is not designed to encourage blame, nor to give rise to no win, no fee claims; instead its first aim is to "learn from what has happened in the past in order to try and avoid repeats in the future. The industry wants to establish the causes of near-misses as well as accidents so that they are not repeated and so as to avoid inappropriate enforcement action by officers who may not understand the industry's working methods."
Whether the form fulfils these aims remains to be seen; however, its introduction has been welcomed by the majority of those within the industry. Will Donaghy, from the Broadcasting, Entertainment, Cinematograph and Theatre Union (BECTU), comments, "BECTU welcomes this positive development. We hope that the information gathering exercise will help to improve the health and safety of theatre workers throughout the UK."
