No win, no fee claims and depolarisation

In 2011 personal injury solicitors who deal with no win, no fee claims for catastrophic brain injuries were just one group who sat up and took notice of the latest research into so-called "brain tsunamis" or "killer waves".

The research was published in The Lancet Neurology and concerned the "spreading depolarisations" which take place following a traumatic brain injury, such as that sustained in a car accident or fall from height.

Scientists at King's College Hospital and King's College London working in collaboration with the department of neurosurgery at the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Medicine and the UC Neuroscience Institute, detailed how of 103 patients who undergo neurosurgery following a major head trauma, 58 were subject to the phenomenon known as cortical spreading depolarisation, also known as "killer waves" or "brain tsunamis."

This phenomenon has long been a mystery to scientists, who have time and again tried to explain it. However, what has become clear, and was confirmed by the research, was that these tsunamis are associated with more catastrophic outcomes.

Although the exact pathology of brain tsunamis remains unknown, it is understood that when it undergoes significant trauma nerve cells in the brain malfunction. This causes depolarisation which sets off a domino effect in neighbouring cells, moving like a tidal wave through the brain, wreaking devastation.

"This is an exciting area of research, which is attracting a lot of interest and collaboration internationally. This study provides real, concrete evidence that brain tsunamis can cause further damage to the brain in the few days after a major injury. This is significant, because they have a direct link to poor recovery in patients. Of course, the end goal is to take the results of this study and, longer term, develop new treatments for this type of injury. This potentially may mean finding a way of blocking these killer waves as they are happening," commented one of the researchers.
