It seems that, whatever their undoubted benefits, no win, no fee systems cannot help but attract negative headlines.
This has again proven true in 2008. Only, this time, the no win, no fee system in question relates not to personal injury or libel litigation, but to cricket.
The system, the brainchild of Antiguan-Barbadian billionaire Sir Allen Stanford, involves staging Twenty20 matches between leading international cricket teams and offering a winner-takes-all prize jackpot of £20 million.
However, critics of the games have questioned whether the system is in keeping with the game's gentlemanly traditions. Others have also pointed out that even the littlest mistake by one player could, if it influences the outcome of a match, potentially make him a pariah with his teammates.
One can only imagine that, with £20 million prize money on offer and myriad US-style marketing campaigns lined up to support the game, if any spectator gets injured the organisers will have enough money to pay out accident compensation.
Actually, spectator injuries are more common in cricket than in a number of other sports. The weight of cricket balls together with the speeds they travel at means that they can inflict serious injuries to any person who is hit by one.
And then there are the injuries sustained as a result of spectator stands or seats collapsing. For example, in 2007 a Manchester-based personal injury solicitor secured £6,000 compensation for a woman who broke her wrist when, watching a cricket match, the seat she was sitting on collapsed.
