Single parents in the UK are some of the nation's most hard working and under pressure people. For most, trying to combine the school-run with regular meals, housework, paid employment and some attempt at a social life will be a real struggle. For such a demographic, making a no win, no fee claim in the event of an accident can be the crucial difference between nose-diving into financial uncertainty and remaining above the breadline.
David Green, director of the Institute for the Study of Civil Society, comments, "The biggest disadvantage of lone parenthood that you're much more likely to be poor." This is precisely the reason why the no win, no fee personal injury claim system was established. It allows financially disadvantaged people injured in accidents who would otherwise have no recourse to civil processes, the chance to claim compensation.
Fortunately, over recent years much of the stigma that lone parents used to attract has dissipated, and society is beginning to recognize the reality of single parenthood. Jane Ahrends, from Single Parent Families, comments, "The vast majority of lone parents are ordinary working mums and dads in their 30s and 40s, who are just trying to do their best in circumstances they didn't choose.
"And remember, families are constantly changing - lone parenthood is not a permanent state for most people. It's a phase, usually lasting about five and a half years."
And single parents are no longer the silent minority they used to be. Around one-quarter of all children in the UK now live with just one parent, three times the percentage recorded in 1972.
A brief look at the financial reality facing most of the UK's single parents helps explain why any single parent injured in an accident may need to claim compensation. For example, 66% of single parents live in rented accommodation, compared to just 22% of couples with live-at-home children. Naturally, with the pressure of rent, if a parent is injured and has his or her income stream removed, injury compensation may be imperative in keeping both the parent and child in non-emergency accommodation.
