Many of us will be familiar with going to a restaurant, pub, bar or public event and being given a plastic glass to drink from. However much not being allowed a real glass might make one feel like a child, it is perfectly understandable. After all, no establishment wishes to endanger customers while also being considered liable for 100% compensation in the event anyone does sustain injury.
Yes, there are "unbreakable" polycarbonate vessels already on the market, such as those made from pyrex, yet they do not have the elegant lightness or feel of pure glass, while also being of a cost that is prohibitive to all but the most upmarket of establishments.
Fortunately, it seems an answer to the problem of the eco-unfriendly plastic glass may only be around the corner. Scientists from Wales, England, France and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), have been working for some years on a form of high-density shock-proof glass that could revolutionise the the hospitality industry's glass market.
By melting crystalline solids called zeolites at much lower temperatures than currently used materials are subjected to, the scientists have been able to create a glass that is 60% denser than any previously available; in effect creating a virtually unbreakable glass.
"We have discovered the triggering mechanism. We believe this is the key to the synthesis of the perfect glass," commented one of the team.
He also said that the "research could lead to" a revolution in the bottling and packaging markets.
Yet, until all this becomes a reality, the general public must continue to attend large-scale events such as football matches and music concerts, flimsy plastic glasses in hand.
So too must the hospitality industry wait before they can provide the glasses the public wants without themselves risking liability for 100% compensation.
