From scared to paired

There are reports that the fears of UK traffic wardens over their personal safety are leading to increasing numbers working only in pairs. This is because of increases in physical assaults on traffic wardens from enraged members of the public. Every year, such incidents are the source of a small but significant number of work injury compensation claims.

Calderdale is just one of many towns whose traffic wardens are experiencing the problem, with council bosses anxious over their liability for any resulting work injury compensation claims. The council's corporate services director Catherine Parkinson comments, "These incidents have become more frequent and more serious, and might be linked to increased enforcement responsibilities placed on the council" "The follow-up action with staff after each incident, by parking services managers, has been very good. "The general precautions being taken are satisfactory and staff are well trained, with officers working in pairs in difficult areas."

Physical assaults are not the only work hazard facing traffic wardens. Because of the amount of miles they cover on foot, slip, trip and fall accidents are another occupational hazard posed by traffic warden work, and work injury compensation claims may stem from this kind of accident.
