Pub couple fined for insurance breaches

Two publicans from Lancashire have been fined and prosecuted for failing to buy the insurance necessary to protect their workers in the event of them sustaining injury in a work accident.

The publicans, a couple who run a pub in Chorley, Lancashire, were found guilty of three counts of failing to provide cover for their workers in the event of a work accident and any subsequent injury compensation claims.

A Health and Safety Inspector said that the publicans "cut corners to save money, they were putting their employees in a position where they could have potentially suffered a life changing illness or injury at work and had no recourse to any kind of compensation."

She added, "Despite being given ample opportunity to correct this problem over a period of months, they chose to ignore the advice they were given by HSE so we had no choice but to prosecute."

Among those who were at risk of being unable to claim sufficient workplace injury compensation had they suffered a work accident were waiters and waitresses, a manager, a cleaner and a chef.

The publicans received a fine of £2,400 each and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £2,620.
