Leeds County Court is due to hear the cases of around 20 men who claim that they were inadequately compensated by an official government work injury compensation scheme for the condition vibration white finger.
If successful the men, who all believe that they were under-compensated for aspects of living with the condition vibration white finger, could open the way for tens of thousands of other people to proceed with similar claims.
In fact, if the action is successful, no win, no fee solicitors believe that as many as 50,000 others could commence claims.
Those who received compensation under the scheme made their claims under the belief that it was a fair system and, importantly, convenient because it meant they would not have to go court.
However, it has since come to light that the scheme may have undervalued aspects of the vibration white finger claims, including sums for "services" the claimants could no longer provide for their families, such as basic household tasks and DIY. If this turns out to be the case then it may mean that many have not received 100% compensation.
Since being set up, the scheme has paid out around £4.1 in VWF compensation, with claimants receiving between £2,000 and £25,000.
