Figures released by the Department of Energy and Climate Change have revealed that the government has paid out around £2 million industrial injury compensation in settling 198 vibration white finger claims over the past six months. Overall, of 170,000 claims received, 169,000 have been settled.
Member of Parliament Barbara Keeley has said that she is encouraged by the statistics, which show the government is on course to achieve targets for the settling of vibration white finger claims in her Worsley constituency.
Keeley commented, "It's important that local people whose health has been impaired because of their work in coal mines receive the compensation they are entitled to, including the families of those miners who have died.
"These medical conditions have made life harder for a number of local people who used to work in the mines. I am pleased the Government is on track with processing their compensation claims, with very few outstanding claims still active or awaiting settlement."
In addition to the vibration white finger claims figures, the Department of Energy and Climate Change revealed that it has spent £13 million settling Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease claims.
