Nearly £7 million clinical negligence compensation has been awarded to a man who had is life changed irreversibly by a "reckless" surgeon.
The claimant, who was described as an exceptionally successful professional, decided to donate his right kidney to his father but suffered left kidney failure during the transplant. As a result, he then needed a live saving kidney transplant himself.
Despite this, the ordeal has had a lasting effect and has reduced the man's life expectancy by a decade.
His personal injury lawyer told the High Court in London, "The donation of the kidney was successfully achieved but at a great cost to the claimant who, during the course of the operation, suffered torrential, life-threatening haemorrhaging."
In approving the clinical negligence compensation payout the judge agreed and described the consequences as "catastrophic".
Although it accepted liability for the clinical negligence compensation claim, the defendant, Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, contested the £14 million initially being sought by the claimant.
