Faulty product injury claim news
01/07/2008
Sofa compensation could exceed £10 million
The sum total of faulty product injury claim compensation paid out to be people who bought sofas from several UK retailers is expected to exceed the £10 million mark.
In a saga that has gathered pace since BBC programme Watchdog brought the sofas, and their contamination with toxic fungicide dimethyl fumarate (DMF), to the public's attention, several hundred people are now expected to make faulty product injury claims.
Among those affected are a number of babies and toddlers who developed symptoms after prolonged contact with the sofas. These symptoms have ranged from chemical burns to blisters and ruptured skin.
The mother of one affected child, a three-year old boy, commented on how he had been impacted, "One night I found him with blood all over his face because he had been scratching himself in his sleep. We had to put gloves on him."
Consumer groups have expressed outrage that on learning of the the DMF contamination some retailers failed to contact consumers to inform them of the danger. One retailer was reported to be selling the sofas at a discount rate as recently as last week.
UK personal injury solicitors representing those affected are now bracing themselves for what could turn out to be one of the largest faulty product injury claims in the nation's history.
