Crash for cash gangs are moving into Scotland in the hope of cashing in on Scottish accident claims, according to reports.
Although car crash gangs have long been known to operate extensively in England, it is only in recent months that the scale of their Scottish operations has become apparent, and evidence suggests that this criminal, and usually whiplash-oriented, activity is growing.
Glen Marr, Insurance Fraud Bureau director, comments,"We have a list of 125 hotspot areas where we know networks are operating. The higher up the list, the higher the likelihood of innocent drivers being caught.
"Glasgow comes in at 63 and Edinburgh at 85. So they are on the list and climbing up it, but not at the top. As we target areas of high activity, unfortunately, the pattern is the gangs move on to new areas. So, as some postcodes come down our hotspot list, others go up."
There are concerns that as fraudulent crash activity continues someone may eventually suffer serious personal injury or die as a result of a staged accident.
So far those targeted have been known to suffer minor neck injuries on occasion, but those in the know worry that it is only a matter of time before a staged Scottish accident claim goes horribly wrong.
