F1 driver narrowly dodges whiplash neck injury
While Kimi Raikkonen won the weekend's Spanish Grand Prix, seemingly without breaking a sweat, his fellow Finn Heikki Kovalainen was carried to hospital in a neck brace over fears of a whiplash neck injury or worse after being involved in a car crash.
Kovalainen's car lost a tyre when a piece of chassis appeared to break off, leaving him unable to steer, and he went nose-first into a tyre wall at 240km per hour. The safety car and medical car were deployed immediately in fear for his personal injury, and - although the driver was taken to hospital in a neck brace - he appears to have suffered nothing more significant than concussion.
He has, however, complained of pain in his elbow.
As the driver appears to have escaped a whiplash injury, the vehicle manufacturer may be examining this car crash to see if any of the safety features that protected him could be used in everyday cars to help minimise the number of whiplash compensation claims that UK personal injury lawyers have to deal with each year.
