Police and solicitors to negotiate payment

Personal injury solicitors representing a Sheffield resident have filed a high court road accident compensation writ against the police after the 35-year-old woman suffered serious multiple injuries when she was hit by a police patrol car in 2005.

Insurers representing the police force have already accepted liability for the road accident compensation claim as it is been found that the police driver was illegally driving in a bus lane. However they and the claimant's personal injury solicitor still must reach a decision on the amount of money to be awarded under the terms of the case.

It is understood that the woman and her legal team are seeking up to £150,000 for brain injuries, as well as facially disfiguring injuries for which she needed reconstructive surgery, including an operation to rebuild a shattered eye socket. The fact that the claimant still suffers anxiety, panic attacks and nightmares relating to the accident may be significant to eventual award of road accident compensation.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police commented on the case, saying that they "have accepted liability for the accident, through their insurers, and are liaising with… solicitors to reach an acceptable settlement as soon as possible."
