Report reveals treatment woes for trauma victims

The National Audit Office has produced a report revealing that the treatment of personal injury car crash and work accident victims has not improved in 20 years, The Telegraph reports.

Experts who worked on the report warn that many trauma patients die needlessly each year and that there is a great variation in treatment around the nation.

Dr Karim Bohri, consultant trauma surgeon at the Royal London hospital, said, "Emergency care has fallen by the wayside, apart from the targets for ambulances to reach patients and the four-hour target in A&E there has been little else. The lack of improvement in trauma has been across the board.

"Lord Darzi recommended major trauma networks and we hope that this work will now be followed through.

"Rehabilitation of trauma patients is woeful everywhere. We save their lives for them to languish at home, unable to go out, they lose their jobs and cannot support their families. This really needs addressing."

Recommendations have been made for the setting up of a network of specialist trauma centres for severe personal injury victims whereby such patients would bypass their local A&E department and be taken directly to a specialist centre.

Even if the trauma centre is further away, the expedient access to specialist care would greatly benefit the patient and it is hoped this could prevent around 20% of injury-related deaths.
