Personal injury solicitor convicted over callous fraud

A 59-year-old personal injury solicitor who defrauded one of his clients of more than £1.2 million in road accident compensation has been convicted of fraud at Manchester Crown Court.

The court heard how the personal injury solicitor had forged a letter allegedly from the road accident claimant, signing away more than half of his compensation as a "gift".

It was only in 2004 that the deception came to light when the road accident claimant, who was paralysed in a 1999 crash, called up the legal firm to request more money only to be told that his account was "empty". At that stage the account should still have contained more than £1 million.

The incredulous claimant said, "I was shocked because I knew I should have had in excess of £1m in the account. I did not know what to do."

Convicted of 53 charges of false accounting, two counts of obtaining pecuniary advantage by deception, three counts of money laundering and one count of fraud, the disgraced personal injury solicitor will be sentenced on 7 April.

Judge Roger Thomas QC commented, "It is inevitable there is going to be passed on him a significant custodial sentence.

"The case involves first of all him defrauding financial institutions and then the very unfortunate Mr A., out of considerable sums of money over a considerable period of time.

"You have been convicted on quite frankly, overwhelming evidence."
