Lawyer in dock over fraud charges

The trial of a Las Vegas-based personal injury lawyer has begun. The 69-year-old is facing charges of fraud and conspiracy in relation to an alleged scheme which prosecutors say was used to falsify medical costs so as to increase the size of compensation awards.

US press report the personal injury lawyer, who adamantly maintains his innocence, as saying that he welcomes the trial because it will give him an opportunity to clear his name. He is pleading not guilty to 18 separate felony charges including money laundering, obstruction of justice, mail fraud, conspiracy and aiding and abetting.

He alleges that the insurance industry is using the trial purely as a means of pegging back the costs of personal injury compensation awards.

If found guilty the personal injury lawyer could face many years in prison as well as a multi-million dollar fine.
