Accident pictures raise funds for life savers
A trucker who was impaled on an 8ft pole after it smashed through the cab of his truck has released pictures of his personal injury accident in a bid to raise funds for the organisation he believes saved his life, the Great North Air Ambulance (GNAA).
The work accident occurred in Darlington on 19th August 2008, while the delivery driver was crossing from one part of an industrial estate to the other. The 39-year-old's truck managed to catch a loose gateway barrier, which had been hidden by a bush, causing a pole to launch off the truck's bonnet and smash through the windscreen.
The pole pierced the man's chest, narrowly missing his heart, and as he lay impaled on the shaft he realised no-one was around to call for help.
Fortunately, he was able to reach his mobile phone to call his boss.
"I've had a bit of an accident," he said, "I'm in a spot of bother."
Rescue workers quickly attended the scene to cut the driver out of his vehicle and the GNAA were able to land nearby because local forklift truck drivers moved parked cars to create a large enough space.
In the hospital, surgeons induced a 24-hour coma so that the pole could be removed from the man's ribs and although he has a lasting shoulder injury he was back at work within months.
The worker said, "Without the helicopter I don't think I would have survived the trip to hospital.
"I can't thank the GNAA, the doctors and the rescue team enough. They are all truly amazing."
