A controversial anti-acne drug that has faced no win, no fee claims has been withdrawn from the market, according to Reuters.
One American legal campaigner refused to welcome the decision, saying that it left "millions of patients around the world with fewer treatment opportunities" as the result of "aggressive, self-interested" litigation brought by personal injury lawyers.
However, the manufacturers of Accutane, Roche Holding AG, denied that the actions of personal injury solicitors on behalf of compensation claimants were responsible for the decision, stating instead that the prevalence of generic alternatives made the named drug uneconomical. The firm did, however, note the high cost of defending the personal injury claims that had been brought.
The drug had been linked with birth defects and alleged to cause depression in the no win, no fee claims that have been brought against the firm.
