Crohn's disease, an autoimmune condition that causes inflamed intestines and a variety of symptoms. It is incurable but can be treated quite successfully with the careful implementation of dietary changes, lifestyle adjustments, medication and, occasionally surgery. However, such successful treatment is not possible in the case of misdiagnosis, in which case sufferers may develop potentially severe or fatal symptoms.
Although diagnosis can be complicated, there are several accepted means of ascertaining an accurate opinion. These include radiologic tests, endoscopy, nuclear scans and blood tests.
Typically, children are diagnosed because of observed growth retardation or irritable bowel-type symptoms. In Crohn's, growth failure is caused by the child's body being unable to absorb nutrients.
Both children and adults are likely to report symptoms such as diarrhoea and abdominal pain. Some may also suffer other symptoms such as rashes, arthritis and inflamed eyes.
Untreated, Crohn's may cause serious problems such as fistulae, abscesses, perforation, haemorrhage and malnutrition and even raises the risk of cancer.
In 2011 a Midlands hospital accepted liability for a misdiagnosis which led to the death of a 23-year-old father.
A locum GP had diagnosed the man with a groin strain – he had in fact been in severe and disabling pain caused by a Crohn's-related perforated abscess.
After a Serious Untoward Incident Investigation, the relevant primary care trust apologised and admitted that the GP should have sought a second opinion.
