Merseyside medical negligence cases rising

Southport and Ormskirk Hospital Trust has revealed that medical negligence claims against it rose by 70 percent last year.

Figures published in a local paper revealed that three victims of clinical negligence have successfully made claims against the NHS trust in the last 15 years; the highest damages payout has been around £6 million.

The successful claimants sued after variously suffering brain damage, cerebral palsy and partial paralysis.

A medical negligence claim specialist with a firm of Merseyside personal injury lawyers said, "Our department has seen a general increase in all types of clinical negligence work over the last five years and in some clinical areas we have seen an 80% increase in enquiries and cases.

"Mistakes are far more common than people think. But in the majority of incidents patients don't pursue legal action.

"However times are changing and from our experience people who have been affected by a clinical error are becoming far more aware of their own rights and far more prepared to take legal action."
