Chinese explosion leads to prison and reprimands
Following last year's work accident in which an explosion killed more than a hundred miners in a secret and illegal coal mine, Chinese authorities have clamped down on the people who ran this and other illegal pits in the Linfen area.
More than 200 people have been arrested, according to reports, 900 sites closed down, and 26 administrators arrested and reprimanded. Several high-ranking officials were imprisoned, and a vice-mayor removed from office over bribery issues.
Linfen accounts for approximately half the coal mined in Shanxi province, which itself provides approximately a quarter of the coal for the whole of China. Although coal is therefore a key component of Linfen life, this industrial accident involved a pit in which no ventilation had been installed, which made a work accident more likely and more liable to cause personal injury.
