An ex-employee of a Leicestershire design firm has received a six-figure sum in settlement of a claim that he contracted a fatal asbestos cancer while working there.
The man, who was given less than two years to live after being diagnosed with mesothelioma sixteen months ago, was offered £177,000 after more than a year of legal work on his industrial disease compensation case.
He said, "I hope the settlement does something to alert the public about the dangers of asbestos. It took 32 years for the cancer to show up in my chest and since then I have had four operations."
The company said it was "aware of the sad story of a former employee who has contracted a fatal disease linked to exposure to asbestos fibres many years ago. The claim was referred to and handled by the company's then insurers."
It was reported that the man's Buddhist faith and the love of his wife, who he married fifteen months ago, had been crucial to his recovery from the operations that his asbestos cancer had made necessary.
