Journalist wins football ground work injury claim

A prominent sports journalist has received a five-figure sum in ladder accident compensation after falling down a gantry while working at the St Andrew's ground of Birmingham City Football Club. He suffered shoulder and neck injuries, as well as a concussion, as a result of his fall.

The amount of his ladder accident compensation was decided in an out-of-court settlement.

"There was an important principle involved. We were all set to go to court but after the exchange of witness statements, Birmingham City made two offers. I accepted the second, and I am pleased there has been a satisfactory conclusion," the claimant commented.

The personal injury solicitor who represented the journalist's ladder accident claim said that his client had previously complained about the "'Dickensian' state of facilities for radio and and TV reporters at the ground."

He added, "In my view this was an accident waiting to happen, and the case highlighted the need for all clubs to provide safe access to their premises."

Birmingham City FC say that the safety of the press area has been improved since the 2006 accident, which occurred after a fixture between Birmingham and London club Arsenal.
