Fire-fighters who suffer health problems caused by work may be entitled to industrial injury compensation as part of the Industrial Injuries Scheme.

Firstly, "some meaningful degree of disability" must be caused by the disease which is recognised as long-lasting and serious.
Definition and diagnosis of the disease must be achieved confidently and without requiring claimants to be subject to invasive or expensive procedures. Also, an objective diagnosis is preferred independent of the claimant.
