Holiday accidents and medical treatment abroad

It is not only if you suffer a holiday accident that you might need medical treatment while abroad. In fact, with long waiting-lists and the prohibitive cost of private treatment in the UK, an increasing number of people in the UK are choosing to take the route of so-called medical tourism.

Hip replacements, knee replacements, gender reassignments, orthodontic work, infertility treatments and cosmetic surgery are just some of the many procedures people in the UK are opting to have done abroad, in countries as various as India, Belgium, France, Hungary, Turkey, China, Spain and Tunisia.

However, there are a number of complicating factors associated with medical tourism that might, on closer inspection, make it a less attractive option than initially thought.

One aspect of this is the issue of continuing care. The success of many treatments, operations and procedures depends heavily on ongoing treatment and assessment. The vast geographical distance between the UK and most medical tourism destinations makes it very difficult and costly for patients to ensure they receive an appropriate level of aftercare.

The standard and hygiene of care can also be a worry and considering the level of accreditation held by an overseas practitioner can be a minefield, particularly when language difficulties are accounted for.

It can also be traumatic undergoing surgery or treatment in an unfamiliar place that is so far away from the support network that would be provided at home by family and friends.

The issue of negligence compensation can also be much more complex than in other forms of holiday accident claim. This is partly because of difficulties inherent in dealing with foreign definitions of liability.
