Local government officials from China's Hebei province have confirmed that 34 workers at a coalmine there suffered fatal work injury in a devastating industrial accident in July.
Initially, however, the mining company attempted to cover up the accident by paying out unofficial personal injury compensation and making threats to bereaved families, many of who lodged complaints with the State Administration of Work Safety.
25 officials have been sacked and reprimanded over their part in trying to cover up the fatal work injury toll.
The accident happened when illegally stored explosives ignited in a pit. In addition to the 34 workers, an emergency services worker suffered fatal work injury in attempting to rescue injured miners.
Illegal coalmines are a significant problem in China. However, there illegality makes it difficult to know how many workers die in industrial accidents at the mines each year.
