Serious work accident sees hydraulic hoists removed from use

A work accident in Essex that left three workers with personal injury has led to Network Rail's withdrawal of hydraulic hoists from use. One worker's injuries are described as critical.

Calls for the removal from use of the hoists for fear of industrial accidents had previously been made by the Rail Maritime and Transport Union. A spokesperson said, "This was an appalling accident which has left one of our members, only a few months from retirement, fighting for his life, but the tragedy is that it clearly should never have happened.

"Our thoughts are with those who have been injured and their families, but our members are angry that the concerns of those who use these machines were ignored and there is an alarming pattern emerging here.

"We have been warning that safety standards are suffering because of the increasing pressure on Network Rail to save money."

The hoists involved in the work injury are used to work on overhead power lines. No reports are forthcoming of a compensation claim, but a Network Rail spokesperson stated that they would remain out of use until the completion of an investigation into the work accident.
