US obstetrician attends National Conference for Midwives

The important work of the Erb's Palsy Group in reducing the number of UK birth injuries is well known. It has now received further recognition in the form of a visit by a breakthrough US obstetrician to their National Conference for Midwives.

Held in Coventry during June, this year's conference was notable for the appearance of Dr William Zavanelli, an obstetrician from California who has pioneered the Zavanelli Manoeuvre, a delivery technique designed to reduce the incidence of Erb's Palsy.

Chairman of the Erb's Palsy Group, Karen Hillyer, commented on the important work of the organisation. "We have been holding these conferences for nine years and seen a 45 per cent decrease in the number of children being born with the condition - from one in 1,000 births to one in 1,800 births - just by teaching midwives a few simple techniques!" she said.

The organisation's website provides information that may be useful to anyone affected by the condition, whether or not they are considering making a birth injury compensation claim.
