Seatbelt blitz hits motorists

Drivers in Essex were reminded the hard way this weekend of the dangers of failing to wear a seatbelt. In a three-hour blitz on motorists, 60 of those stopped at a busy junction were found not to be wearing seatbelts, risking both their personal safety and their entitlement to car accident compensation.

The seatbelt drive, a joint initiative between police and the Essex Casualty Reduction Board, targeted both passengers and drivers, and aimed to encourage them to wear a seatbelt on even the shortest of journeys. Organisers also highlighted the danger of flouting seatbelt law, the tough consequences of a fixed penalty notice and the potential such careless motoring has for disqualifying drivers from receiving 100% car accident compensation, regardless of the skill of the no win, no fee solicitor representing the claimant.

Norman Hulme, chairman of the Essex Casualty Reduction Board, commented on the drive, "If you are involved in a road accident when not wearing a seatbelt you have a greater chance of being seriously injured. Additionally, your chances of receiving compensation could be reduced if you are in a crash, since insurance companies check police accident reports to see if seatbelts were being worn at the time of the incident.

"An accident can happen in a second, even when we are stationary, so we all need to belt up whenever we are behind the wheel."

One of the motivations behind the scheme was reportedly an accident one seatbelt-flouting motorist had with a cow. An Essex Police traffic management officer commented on the incident, "The driver's car was launched into the air by the cow and after the car rolled over a few times the driver escaped with just a few scratches.

"It was some time ago, but it was yet another example of why people should wear seatbelts."

It is not known whether the cow-collision motorist has made a claim for car accident compensation.
