Dressage rider claims for £300,000 after car accident

A Sussex dressage rider has been forced to abandon dreams of competing at the highest level after he was involved in a serious car accident.

Now the 23-year-old man, once hotly tipped for a place in the British Olympic team, is launching a £300,000 car accident compensation claim against the driver who caused the crash.

Following the 2009 car crash the driver, also 23, was convicted of driving without due care and attention.

The dressage rider, then a passenger in the driver's vehicle, has accused him of speeding, loosing control, and failing to slow down, causing the Renault Clio to collide with an oncoming car.

Both his thighs and right knee were seriously injured, requiring an eight-hour surgery that left him heavily scarred and with an altered gait.

His compensation claim makes it clear that he is unlikely to return to riding at the top level, ending his dreams of competing at the Olympics and working as a trainer thereafter.

The writ, produced by his London-based compensation solicitors, states: "Prior to the accident, the claimant was a talented dressage rider with excellent career prospects. It is likely that he would have progressed to the national team.

"He has lost the opportunity to bring on horses, breed horses and run a specialist dressage business. All were dependent on his status as a top dressage rider. It is unlikely that the claimant will be able to return to riding at that level."

The writ specifies £300,000 as the minimum acceptable level of car accident compensation.
