A Lancashire building firm has been fined £8,000 after HSE inspectors accused the company of not taking health and safety seriously during a hearing at Trafford Magistrates Court in Manchester recently.
The court heard that a worker at one of its sites was crushed by a wall he was helping to demolish. He suffered fractures to his left leg, collar bone, arm and back injuries. He has been unable to return to work since the accident in July.
An HSE inspector said, "A [company] manager briefly told his employees what he wanted, but failed to stay on the site to check his instructions were followed. More shockingly, only one of the workers had previous experience of demolition work but he did not stay on the site the whole time.
"The others had neither the experience nor qualifications needed to demolish buildings."
The Leigh firm admitted breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act. They were fined for the construction accident and ordered to pay £3,517 costs. It is unknown whether the injured worker will now be making a no win, no fee claim for 100% compensation.
