Family could make claim for fatal work accident

British Waterways has been fined 100,000 following the deaths of two of its workers.

The company admitted negligence for a work accident in which a 41-year-old man and his 19-year-old son died in Melksham, Wiltshire.

The two men were trimming a hedge alongside the Kennet and Avon Canal near Pewsey in December 2001 when the towpath gave way and their tractor plunged into the water.

In a statement, British Waterways commented on the fatal accident and said, "BW accepts that it failed on this occasion to conduct its operations in a way to ensure, so far as is reasonably practical, the prevention of an accident."

The chief executive for British Waterways added, "I deeply regret that these tragic deaths occurred and offer my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the two men."

In the future, the victims' family may consider contacting personal injury solicitors to make a work accident compensation claim.
