Two people have been executed for their parts in the Chinese tainted baby milk scandal which led to six infant deaths and hundreds of thousands of children becoming ill. Meanwhile, the Chinese Supreme Court has yet to respond to appeals from over 200 families that the product liability compensation offered to them was inadequate.
Court officials acknowledged the executions of Zhang Yujun and Geng Jinpin – 19 other people have been sentenced to prison terms – for their roles in allowing milk powder contaminated with melamine to enter the food chain.
In December 2008, 22 implicated companies were ordered by the government to pay a total of 1.1 bn yuan (£97.5m) to the families whose children had died or become ill after drinking milk made from the powder. However, personal injury lawyers acting on behalf of some of the families have said that local authorities were told by the government to negotiate with individual families to reach settlement.
One product liability compensation solicitor said, "We have handled over 400 cases... [and] more than 100 families have not yet reached an agreement with their local government on a satisfying compensation."
