A gang of men who made fraudulent car crash claims has been sentenced to a total of 10 years imprisonment at St Albans Crown Court.
The car crash claim gang was headed by two brothers and included one man who owned a garage that was used as part of the scam.
The fraud came to the attention of the police, who then contacted the Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB), because of some irregularities in a number of the claims made by the group.
A crown prosecution spokesperson commented, "This is one of the first cases of its kind prosecuted in the UK. The commitment from the police, the IFB and the prosecution team has undoubtedly been the cause for securing these convictions."
While a police spokesperson commented on the gang's modus operandi, saying, "False details about the accidents were provided to insurance companies and bogus documents were created. Some vehicles were deliberately damaged in order to support the claims, which were made in respect of damage to the vehicles, personal injuries, recovery costs, hire vehicles, legal costs and loss of earnings."
It is not believed that any personal injury solicitors participated in the fraud, but some of the money the police now hope to claim back from the car crash claim gang will include that which was spent on legal fees.
A police spokesperson commented, "With support from the Crown Prosecution Service, the Constabulary has been able to restrain more than £1m in assets from those convicted with a view to securing confiscation under the Proceeds of Crime Act. This legislation enables us to hit criminals where it hurts in their pockets."
