A Bradford MP has been exerting pressure on behalf of his constituents over asbestos compensation claims, it was reported last Friday.
The local representative has been lobbying ministers over the pleural plaques decision that meant insurance companies were no longer liable to pay out over the lung-scarring condition.
He said, "This will be on the agenda. I have been lobbying for it and I expect it will move forward quite soon."
The condition is symptomless, and insurance companies therefore argue that it is not a disease. The MP, and many personal injury solicitors, argue that it is five times more likely that mesothelioma, a serious asbestos-related lung cancer, may afflict a pleural plaques sufferer.
Hundreds of Bradford people have died from asbestos-related diseases since 1981, and many have made successful asbestos compensation claims. It is therefore no surprise to see a local MP act strongly in favour of pleural plaques and mesothelioma sufferers.
