Obstetric clinical negligence costs rise in Wales

The latest NHS obstetric figures for Wales show that there has been a more than 100% rise in the cost of birth injury claims between 2003-04 and 2007-08.

Figures also show that the cost of such birth injury claim is totalling nearly £30 million a year, including legal fees.

In addition, the Welsh Audit Office has concluded that there are flaws in the way pre- and post- natal care is handled in Wales.

A spokesperson comments, "We found the culture in some trusts might not be conducive to learning from such incidents. For example, staff in five trusts told us they do not get timely and comprehensive feedback following such incidents."

While Jeremy Colman, Auditor General for Wales, said, "Women in Wales should be able to expect the best level of care when having a baby.

"Whether their pregnancy, labour and postnatal phase is straightforward or whether they need special care, they put their trust in the NHS."

Furthermore, it was found that birth injury claims account a significant amount of medical negligence solicitor work in Wales, representing 66% of the value of all clinical negligence compensation action.
