Birmingham workers underestimate dangers of asbestos

A Birmingham paper has reported that the city's tradespeople are worryingly unaware of the dangers of mesothelioma and asbestosis that exposure to asbestos could open them to.

A British Lung Foundation survey showed that few tradespeople regularly checked that sites they were about to work on had been examined for asbestos, despite the substance's status as the UK's biggest workplace killer.

One in ten said that they had been pressured to continue working in sites where asbestos was suspected to be present, and one in four believed that some levels of asbestos could be considered safe.

A British Lung Foundation representative said, "It is a great worry that those most at risk of this cruel cancer know so little about a killer that could be lurking in the building they're working on."

Mesothelioma, an asbestos-related cancer of the lung linings, has a 15-60 year incubation period, and experts suggest that there will be an epidemic in the UK between 2011 and 2015 as cases come to light through medical diagnoses and personal injury claims.
