An Essex classroom assistant has succeeded in making a back injury claim for a slipped disc she sustained as a result of carrying heavy school lunches.
The 48-year-old, who worked at an infant’s school in Colchester, had been assisting a colleague in lifting a heavy insulated box in 2006 when she felt a sharp pain in her back, an injury which exacerbated an existing degenerative spinal condition.
She explained her reasons for making the back injury claim, “I am in constant pain, which means, at the moment, I am unable to work.
“I try hard to carry on with life as normal, but I have a 13-year-old son and I’m aware there are things I can no longer do with him, like cycling.”
The litigation was carried out with the assistance of the woman’s union, the GMB, as well as the representation of a work accident solicitor.
Although the precise amount of the back injury claim settlement remains undisclosed, it is understood to be a “significant sum” of accident compensation.
