Ashton's ankle injury may see compensation claim

Dean Ashton, the West Ham striker, has finally had to admit that his footballing days are over after a career-ending tackle occurred during an England Training session in 2006. The top-flight footballer may now launch a multi-million pound personal injury compensation claim against the team-mate who caused his ankle injury.

Alternatively, Ashton may lodge his claim against the Football Association who have insurance cover for footballers when training or playing in the England squad.

The initial injury ruled the West Ham front man out for 11 months, and although he did return to play in the Premiership, he is now suffering from chronic degeneration of the ankle.

He is able to run on the joint, but cannot twist or turn, and his ankle is unable to bear any impact. He is also in constant discomfort.

If he continues to play, doctors have warned him that he would almost certainly face further surgery and could be left unable to walk.

As well as Ashton's personal injury compensation claim the FA are likely to also face a claim for compensation from West Ham. It is unclear as to whether or not the club will be instructing a local no win no fee solicitor to proceed with the claim.
