Goldmine town fears over potentially asbestos-laden dirt

A landfill closure in California is causing a headache for the council as a local resident raises the possibility of residents contracting asbestosis from the soil that will be used to close the site.

The soil is to be taken from a goldmine, and the County Administrator's office states that it is clear of arsenic, asbestos and other contaminants. However, the resident, who has lived in Jamestown for forty years, remembers the goldmine's heyday, when the town would often be covered in a layer of dust. As the rocks in the area contain asbestos, she fears that the potentially deadly fibres will contaminate the air in the town if disturbed.

"When you could see how the wind would lift dust above the mine, (residents) were real concerned," the resident said. "It's really a health and safety issue to me."

Aside from asbestosis, the fibres have been linked to mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer, and pleural plaques. These diseases have also been recorded in the UK in people who worked with the fibres, and no win no fee compensation claims can be made by these sufferers.
