Jarrow MP joins asbestos compensation campaign

MP for Jarrow, Stephen Hepburn, is campaigning for asbestos compensation for pleural plaques sufferers and will be raising the issue with Harriet Harman, leader of the House of Commons.

Amid growing fears that asbestos exposure victims who are diagnosed with pleural plaques but have not developed mesothelioma will be denied the right to claim for asbestos compensation under plans proposed by the government, Mr Hepburn has called for an early debate on the issue.

The Jarrow MP called the debate so that MPs could "lay down a marker on any Government proposal that might allow future victims of pleural plaques in Scotland to be compensated by the British taxpayer, when future English victims will get nothing at all".

Ms Harman said the Government is "firmly committed to ensuring that people suffering from asbestos-related diseases receive the help and support they need" and acknowledged "the strength of feeling on this important matter".

However, the Government's proposals would make asbestos compensation for the lung scarring condition pleural plaques only payable to those sufferers who made their claims before a 2007 House of Lords decision to prevent such claims.

Can I claim?
