Asbestos claims may be reduced with awareness increase

Hundreds of asbestos claims are made every year in Great Britain, but future claims might be reduced if people are educated about the risks of working with, or disturbing, the potentially dangerous fibres.

British asbestos campaigners have created a survey, with the help of the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS), and aim to investigate people's awareness and knowledge of the risks of asbestos in buildings.

According to UKAS, Health and Safety Executive statistics show that asbestos-related health problems, such as mesothelioma, are the cause of around 4000 fatalities every year. This means that asbestos is the most prevalent cause of work deaths in the whole of Britain.

The hope is that the survey will verify how aware of asbestos safety regulations employers, and their employees, are.

The Chair of the Asbestos in Schools Group, states, "This survey is a welcome step in the right direction.

"It is so vital that we highlight the dangers surrounding asbestos and I hope that participation in this survey is as wide as possible."

The results will be published this summer in a report on the Asbestos Inspection Bodies website.

If the data collected shows that knowledge of asbestos risks is lacking it could lead to a larger campaign to spread awareness among companies and workers and, as a result, a reduction of asbestos claims for personal injury compensation could be seen in the future.
