The insurers of the now defunct Woolworths retail chain could be facing a swathe of asbestos claims, after it was revealed that the widower of a former cashier has instructed personal injury solicitors to pursue an industrial illness claim for his late wife's mesothelioma death.
The asbestos claim relates to a period during the woman's 35-year employ at Woolworths in Durham when, it is alleged, she was exposed to asbestos during a store refit.
However, as the refit occurred during the 1960s, the mesothelioma compensation specialist is having difficulty tracing witnesses. As such, he has issued a call for anyone with information to step forward and assist with attempts at litigation.
"Because it was in the early Sixties, we are having difficulties tracing witnesses," said the UK solicitor.
"We are trying to get people to come forward. The case either stands or falls on this."
Spokespeople for the relevant liability insurers have so far failed to comment on the asbestos claim.
