Bishop of Peterborough contracts asbestos cancer

The Bishop of Peterborough has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, an asbestos cancer that often leaves sufferers with only months to live.

The messages of support he has received from people of all faiths in the city has, he said, given him great joy and hope, and the strength to fight the disease.

He says "I know I've been prayed for at the mosque and synagogue in Peterborough. I have friends in both.

"The fact people are praying for you is a tremendous source of support. You never feel alone.

"When it became known I had cancer, I received a deluge of cards. So many people stopped me, and were enormously encouraging, which left me feeling very positive."

Asbestos cancers, such as mesothelioma, and conditions such as asbestosis and pleural plaques, are generally contracted after breathing in asbestos fibres. The Bishop says he has never worked in an asbestos-related industry, but he says that there have been many occasions on which he could have been exposed to the deadly fibres.

He said: "If you have cancer, my message is to go on living. We are all mortal. The only certainty about life is that one day, it will end.

"But you don't think about it you just get on with living."

Fortunately, the bishop may be able to get on with living for longer than may have been expected, as the condition was diagnosed early. A course of chemotherapy shrank the asbestos cancer tumour noticeably, and he plans to return to light duties soon.
