Woman's flat fears confirmed after flood
The Mirror has reported on the case of a woman who found she was living in an asbestos cancer risk when her flat was flooded three years ago.
The council-owned flat proved to be "riddled with deadly asbestos", according to the article, and has been covered in warning stickers. The material, a source of industrial disease including mesothelioma and asbestosis, was only discovered in the contents of her vacuum cleaner after she tidied up the dust caused by repairs to the flat.
The London woman, 46, supported the paper's campaign for a public register of the potentially lethal mineral, saying, "It's a terrible thing. We are being treated like second-class citizens. I had no idea what I was living with until the flood. They should tell you on your tenant's agreement whether there's asbestos in your council flat. It should be compulsory."
A Southwark councillor indicated that a survey of council housing was underway.
After an independent survey confirmed the woman's fears of her flat being an asbestos cancer risk, she has begun re-housing talks.
