A former trainee teacher has been awarded £365,000 in bus accident compensation for a 2004 incident which left him with a broken pelvis and shattered hip.
The 32-year-old had been standing beside his car when a school bus reversed without warning, causing the injuries which have now led to the payout of. In separate action relating to the case, the bus driver was found guilty of driving without due care and attention, incurring nine penalty points and a £200 fine.
Since experiencing his traumatic injuries, the former trainee teacher has expressed concern about the number of people who have suffered injuries in similar road accidents involving Islington Council vehicles. Using the Freedom of Information Act he has discovered that there have been 12 similar accidents involving members of the public in the past five years.
He commented, "The fact that there have been so many serious accidents involving council vehicles in the past five years shows there is something badly wrong."
He also spoke about some of the issues that played a part in the determination of his six-figure award. "I'd been engaged to marry at the time of the accident but I was so shattered that the relationship broke up," he said.
"I needed counselling to cope with the anger and depression I felt. It wasn't just that my life had been turned upside down through no fault of my own it was also because the council didn't want to accept responsibility."
